Language in Games

post=98621
As many of you are well aware, I have played and reviewed a great many of your projects at this point and I notice a few recurring trends that bother me. The one that bothers me the most is the incredibly casual, almost thoughtless use of extremely vulgar profanity in many games. I realize that many of these projects are intended for a mature audience but it can sometimes be extremely off-putting to see these cute stylized sprites using such language in such casual, off-handed way. Sure, it works in some settings but in some cases it just completely clashes with it.

What motivates you to use such language in a game? To make it seem edgy or mature? To make it sound more natural? To make it sound cooler? How do you feel about such language being used in projects? Discuss.

This is pretty hilarious of a post for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, your entire post saves itself from stupidly presuming that swear words are somehow inherently bad when you say:

Sure, it works in some settings but in some cases it just completely clashes with it.

So then, the question isn't about swearing (that you call it "profanity" is again, hilarious, and shows how brainwashed you are) at all, but about people putting things in their games that don't belong.

It's fine for you to criticize out-of-place swearing in RPG's if it's a recurring problem. The issue is, when you feel an irrational discomfort towards cuss-words (which your post clearly shows), your idea of when swearing is appropriate is going to be very biased. Personally, I'm making a game that I want kids to be able to play - I think kids can handle swear words and all but the light atmosphere of the game I envision makes swearing seem really awkward. This is my call as an artist. But if my game were your average epically epic RPG, you'd have to expect at least SOME swearing in the dialogue if you want your game to have verisimilitude. That's just how some people talk. Are we to expect that every game be completely devoid of personalities whom you'd expect would swear?

I don't think a lot profanity of any kind really helps your writing, regardless of who the characters are. Just like a person who swears a lot in real life is not very articulate and creative, having a lot of profanity in your writing shows that the writer is not very articulate and creative.

I know that this is an empirical claim and that I'm going to be asked to prove it by all the muppets on this forum, but I'll say this anyway: I'm sure (to the point that I would bet money on it) that at least 90% of people who say statements like that are not very good at writing and probably don't know that much about literature. Have you ever heard of Harold Pinter? Do you think he should just minimize the "profanity" in his work? Are you aware that he won the Nobel prize for literature?

Assertions like "lots of profanity in writing shows lack of creativity" really bother me. Don't talk about things that you know very little of.

And let's not forget- some of his short films were pretty good. I've always liked Vincent.

Doubly awesome in that Vincent Price narrates the whole thing.

agreed, Vincent Price is the man, and that video is super duper good. I'm agnostic as to whether Tim Burton is good/bad/overrated/etc, but I have to affirm how much I've always loved that video

On another note, I don't think anyone here can say they know how frustrating it is to get 49 of the red jewels and find out you missed the 50th one early on in the game. Fuck.

I would, friend. I would... At least the instruction booklet outlined where they all were. would have been killer without it.

The booklet only outlined where the first few were right? I think it stopped telling you stuff after the vampires, which is funny because most people reading it thought the game ended there (since the vampires were pretty difficult). At least this is what I understood from reading youtube comments.

What happens when you beat the vampires as Will...?

Anyway, I totally owned the booklet and the box and everything but my dad like the moron he is threw them out. Stupid adults think only the games are worth anything. I'd still have my Earthbound box if it weren't for that...

More stress should be put on custom graphics

Wow this thread has way too many words in it.

More stress should be put on custom graphics

People tend to forget that what your brain tells you is you "enjoying" something isn't magically confined to one aspect of the thing in question. Just like if I (this is just me personally) own a CD rather than download it, I find the experience of listening to music slightly more enjoyable, it's perfectly reasonable for people to like a game more because it's got graphics that appeal to them more. There's nothing shallow about that. When I think about Yoshi's Island (easily one of my favorite games) and reminisce about how fun it was, yes I think about the complex (well, relatively complex for a platformer. Especially one that's a Mario game) gameplay, yes I think about how challenging it is to complete the game fully, but I also think about the music, the sound effects, the simple crayon-drawn graphics, everything.

I guess what I don't agree with is the suggestion that story, sound, graphics, gameplay, etc are all totally equal - I'd think most rational people (which excludes 99% of people who own an X-Box) would, for example, vastly prefer a game with good gameplay and poor graphics over a game with good graphics and weak gameplay. Some great games have virtually no story (Smash TV, Contra 3, pretty much every Mario game) and are still loved by millions of people. And I'm sure lots of people have played a good game with the volume off and didn't mind at all. Basically, good gameplay is a must, good everything-else is preferred but not necessary.

Worst game you personally do like.

I actually like Kirby's Dreamland 3, even though it's too easy, boring and annoying.
I recently got it for Virtual Console, and I still like it :3

Few people consider this a bad game. Sorry.

Most underrated and overrated RPGs

I totally find Illusion of Gaia underrated. About 13 years ago I remember wanting to buy Toy Story (SNES), but my sister wanted Illusion of Gaia instead, and I always listened to her so I pretended I wanted it too. Still I'm very glad that I did.
On another note, I don't think anyone here can say they know how frustrating it is to get 49 of the red jewels and find out you missed the 50th one early on in the game. Fuck.

Also, Robotrek, since I'm talking about old Enix RPG's.

Spoilerz ahead..

I had a big problem with this movie. I'm pretty sure most people who are honest with themselves agreed with "1" most of the time, since nearly everything 9 wanted to do was irrational. This is pretty clear by the end when you see that only 4 of the 9 are left alive, when they were all perfectly alive from the beginning (why this is for some reason acceptable isn't made terribly clear either when we get the mother of all copouts, "oh well they're free now"), and had they not ever listened to 9 the movie could have ended with at least 8 of them still around.

So how does the writer deal with the fact that the main character is clearly wrong and irrational all the time? They totally contrive out of nowhere a reason for you to hate 1, ie that he sent 2 out to die for no good reason. That came across as, again, contrived as hell, but also not even within 1's character (no matter how much they made him out to be a douche, he didn't seem remotely capable of that).

Also, the dialogue was lame.

Worst game you personally do like.

The gamecube was out when you were in the 3rd grade???

How old are you?
